2 . 4 – 197 μ m spectroscopy of OH / IR stars : the IR characteristics of circumstellar dust in O - rich environments ?

چکیده
Infrared spectra of a number of evolved O-rich stars have been obtained with the Short-and Long-Wavelength spectrometers on board the Infrared Space Observatory. The very broad wavelength coverage (2.4–197 µm) obtained by combining observations made with the two spectrometers includes practically all of the flux emitted by the sources, and allows us to determine the emission and absorption features of the dense cir-cumstellar dust shells. Agreement between the fluxes obtained by the two instruments is generally very good; the largest discrepancies are probably due to source variability. Our sample of oxygen-rich AGB stars exhibits a wealth of spectral features due to crystalline silicates and crystalline water ice in emission and absorption. In this study a qualitative overview of all features due to crystalline silicates and water ice in these high mass loss rate objects is presented. It seems that there is a certain onset value for the mass loss rate above which these features appear in the spectrum. Moreover, crystalline silicate emission features have been detected for the first time at wavelengths where the amorphous silicates are still in absorption, implying different spatial distributions for the two materials. A spherically symmetric and an axi-symmetric geometry are proposed.

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS ISO spectroscopy of circumstellar dust in 14 Herbig Ae/Be systems: towards an understanding of dust processing. Abstract. We present Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) spectra of fourteen isolated Herbig Ae/Be (HAEBE) stars, to study the characteristics of their circumstellar dust. These spectra show large star-to-star differences, in the emission features of both carbo...
متن کاملX-raying Circumstellar Material around Young Stars
Young stars are surrounded by copious amounts of circumstellar material. Its composition, in particular its gas-to-dust ratio, is an important parameter. However, measuring this ratio is challenging, because gas mass estimates are often model dependent. X-ray absorption is sensitive to the gas along the line-of-sight while optical/near-IR extinction depends on the dust. Therefore, the absorber’...
متن کاملProperties of Oh/ir Stars with the Iras Lrs Spectra
1607 OH/IR stars associated with IRAS sources are assembled and the IRAS LRS spectra of 980 OH/IR stars are examined in this paper. The nature of the circumstellar dust for these sources is classiied. The distributions of these subgroups of OH/IR stars in the IRAS color{color diagram and the period{color diagram are interpreted with their evolutionary status. The Galactic and the velocity distr...
متن کاملHD 42927 and HD 126341 : two pulsating B stars surrounded by circumstellar dust ?
We have performed an infrared study of pulsating B stars. The main conclusion is that none of the 163 (non-)radial pulsators shows an IR excess flux due to free-free emission, despite the fact that the sample contains several rapid rotators. Two β Cep stars and two slowly pulsating B stars do exhibit an unexpected infrared colour excess at 12 μm. The small IR excess of the B 2 IV β Cep star HD ...
